Day of the Dead Matchbox

I wanted to share my latest project I did for a craft swap I participated in. This was a matchbox swap where I had to decorate a small matchbox and fill it with either handcrafted items or craft supplies. I made a Day of the Dead matchbox for my partner and decided to fill it with goodies I made. The words "Dia de los Muertos" is painted on the front which means "Day of the Dead" is spanish. For those of you unfamiliar with the holiday here is a link to learn more about it! Anyhow, here is the box in all its painted (acrylic to be exact) glory.

Now onto the contents. I made a black and white sugar skull out of felt, embroidery thread, and beads. I added a small brooch pin to the back. I based the design off of one I saw here. The whole thing was just about twice as large as a quarter. My fingers hurt after making this!! So much tiny hand sewing!

I also made two refrigerator magnets out of felt to match the theme. They were about the size of a quarter (super tiny!!) The first was another sugar skull based on a design I saw here.

The second magnet was a sacred heart design that I basically came up with from memory. Both are so tiny and smaller than a quarter! For these I used E6000 to glue the felt to the magnets.

Slacker

OMG I have been such a slacker lately. I didn't even post the posts I promised to post by the end of February! LOL! AaaaAAAaaaahhh! Sooo sorry! Ugh it has been hectic and crazy lately. My daughter turns 1 in a week so I have been crafting for her and I have a guest coming from England to stay with me for a week so I have been planning activities and cleaning like a madwoman! I pinky promise I will post the remaining items from that previous promise really soon! LOL.

Anyhow, I have a whole bunch of fun things to post from some craft swaps I have been doing lately (also what's been keeping me so busy!). I am really proud of them and hope you like them!

Fused Plastic Bag Coasters

I am placing this under the "Use What You Have Tuesday" category since I literally did just that for this project (you'll see why further down)! Enjoy!

I learned how to fuse plastic bags recently and it has been a crazy experimental ride since! Here is a link so you can learn too! I have screwed up (a LOT) but also learned a lot along the way. I feel like I have perfected the process finally and am happy to show you some coasters I made!

I made these as part of a "green" craft swap on Craftster where we were encouraged to use recycled material but at the very least could not spend any money. Well....no biggie there since I have quite the stash started! Anyhow because of the constraints on the swap I ended up having to used wool felt and synthetic felt. I want to sell these on Etsy and if I do I think I will use only one or the other and not mix the two.

Now because I want to sell these on Etsy I won't completely reveal how did these because of how hard it was to come up with the idea and how many trial-and-errors I had! But, I will say that I infused the bags with colored thread, metallic contact paper and used silver metallic thread for the stitching.

Here is a shot of the set of all four coasters:

And a closeup of two of the coasters:
